Do Homosexuals Have the Same Spiritual Abilities as Heterosexuals?

Houston, TX, November 22, 2022  — In the 2022 US midterm elections, a record number of candidates from the LGBTQ+ community won elections at all levels of government. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey won her bid to become the first openly lesbian governor.

The achievements are in the right direction and overcome the backdrop of an, often, hostile environment. There are prominent voices, from political leaders to radio show hosts, who denounce homosexuality and have pushed anti-LGBTQ+ policies and legislation this year. There are religious leaders who, even in this day and age, call homosexuals as sinners.

Politics and religion mix together to spread intolerance and hate. Recently, a gunman opened fire at a Colorado Springs LGBTQ+ bar killing five people and injuring many more. The global spotlight on the OneLove armband at the 2022 FIFA World Cup has reminded us there are still countries in the world where homosexuality is a punishable crime.

It raises the question, what is the main driver for such intolerance?

“Religious discrimination is at the heart of the problem,” says author, Ravi Kathuria. “Discrimination and judgment against people based on their sexual identity or gender create a caustic environment.”

Do homosexuals have the same spiritual ability as heterosexuals? Is there something that would limit their spiritual ability?

“No, never. Every human being on Earth, regardless of their sexual identity or gender has the exact same spiritual ability,” declares Kathuria. “Religion Discriminates. Spirituality does not discriminate. It cannot!”

Why is spirituality non-discriminatory? In his book, “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.” Kathuria explains sexual identity and gender are about the body and mind. Spirituality is not about the body or the mind.

“Spirituality is only about — the soul,” answers Kathuria. “Your soul does not care whether you are straight or gay. Your soul does not care if you are a man, woman, transgender or non-binary.”

Spirituality, according to Kathuria, is the connection with your soul. He defines the soul as the life energy within us.

“Every human being has a wondrous ability to experience their own soul,” shares Kathuria. “No one can take this fundamental birthright from us.”

Ravi Kathuria’s message that homosexuals and heterosexuals have equal access to their spirituality, is the uplifting message that many younger members of the LGBTQ+ community need to hear, so they may fully realize their potential for a happy life.

“Let us have kindness in our beliefs, thoughts, and actions, for the sake of others, and for the sake of ourselves,” appeals Kathuria. “Anyone who engages in caustic judgments and hatred causes agitations in their own mind sabotaging their spiritual progress. Kindness helps us calm our minds putting us on the path to connect with the amazing peace within — the biggest jackpot of life.”

Is Non-Religious Spirituality the New Religion?

Houston, TX, October 3, 2022 — Nearly one-third of U.S. adults don’t follow a religion, according to a Pew Research Center survey (https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2021/12/14/about-three-in-ten-u-s-adults-are-now-religiously-unaffiliated/). Religious disaffiliation is growing faster among younger Generations.

Modern-day pressures are causing anxiety and stress levels to reach new highs. As life becomes more frenetic, many people are recognizing they have a greater need for peace in their lives.

"In the past, religion has been a refuge from life’s problems, but the modern generation is looking for logical and scientific answers to life’s toughest questions,” says author Ravi Kathuria. “Blind faith is no longer acceptable to the modern generation.”

Is there a meaningful solution for the modern generation? If religion cannot satisfy them, can non-religious spirituality step in to provide solace and a sense of calm?

Thousands of years ago, ancient sages in India discovered human beings had a wonderous spiritual ability, explains Kathuria. They realized it was a fundamental part of the nature of humans, and every human possessed spiritual ability since birth. It is one of the most significant discoveries in human history. Their discovery predated religion and is unrelated to religion.

“Religious doctrines have distracted us away from our inherent and natural spirituality,” says Kathuria. “If we connect with the spirituality within, we can find peace in spite of the modern-day pressures. It is ironic that what the modern world desperately needs was discovered thousands of years ago!”

Every human being, regardless of caste, creed, religious beliefs, region, social status, intelligence, gender and sexual identity has an inborn, inalienable and powerful ability — the spiritual ability. No exceptions. No preconditions, underscores Kathuria.

“Religion Discriminates. Spirituality does not! It cannot!” declares Kathuria.

Spirituality is universal. Everyone has equal access. This truth can make the world a calmer, peaceful place, emphasizes Kathuria. He believes it can change the course of human history.

“It does not matter whether we are religious or atheist, whether we are gay or straight; no one can deny us our spiritual ability,” Kathuria says. “No one can take it away from us. Not a religious leader. Not a spiritual leader. No, not even God!”

Spirituality Pyramid https://happysoulhungrymind.com/spirituality-pyramid/ Mon, 31 May 2021 22:07:36 +0000 https://happysoulhungrymind.com/HWP/?p=5203 Spirituality Pyramid shows the journey from the mind to the soul.

Spirituality Pyramid shows the journey from the mind to the soul.

To understand the journey from the mind to the soul, let us study the spirituality pyramid. This pyramid illustrates the journey.

The Spirituality Red Level

At the lowest level of the pyramid, in the red level, the mind is in a state of unhappiness and sadness. It is driven by emotions and compulsions. Anger, jealousy, stress, grief, regrets, greed and hubris drive the mind to a constant state of dissatisfaction.
The spirituality pyramid is not about morality and is not a tool for passing judgment. The spirituality pyramid is a statement of fact. If your mind is caught up in emotions and compulsions, if it is caught up in addictions and obsessions, you will find life is not as enjoyable, your disturbed mind will cause you great unhappiness.

The Spirituality Blue Level

As the mind steps back from its compulsions, it rises to the next level of the spirituality pyramid, the blue level. This level is about pursuing life’s needs and desires. Love, family and friends, work and fame, acquisition of assets, serving the ego, and enjoying the pleasures in life are part of this level. At this level, the mind is active, it is busy. The mind enjoys life, which is a contrast from the red level where the mind was in constant disarray and dismay.
A majority of the people on Earth aspire to exist in the blue level where they are enjoying love & life, building assets, satisfying their ego, achieving the material benefits of life.

The Spirituality Green Level

A smaller population of Earth aspires to be at the next level of the spirituality pyramid. This is the green level. Here people spend time in nature, pure devotion, selfless service. They immerse themselves in the pursuit of some field of art and enjoy being “in the zone.” Or they pursue knowledge and scientific discovery. People who love their work and enjoy it deeply can elevate their minds from the blue level to the green level. A mother who loves her child with the purest love will experience the satisfaction that comes from the green level. Pure, selfless love without expectations belongs at the green-level.
People whose mind is occupied with activities of the green level will find their mind is quieter. They will experience greater satisfaction and a deeper sense of fulfillment. They will feel contentment from life and enjoy a great quality of life. They will be able to enjoy the blue-level pleasures of life, but also experience the deeper joys of life.

The Gyrations of the Mind

Most people operate in the red, blue and green levels. These levels are not exclusive of each other. Your mind might experience thoughts of distress, love, and devotion, all in the same day, or even in the same hour. The mind may jump around, but when the mind is at higher levels, it will be calmer. In the diagram, the state of the mind arrow on the right side of the spirituality pyramid signifies what the mind experiences. We travel up and down the arrow in our lives.

State of Mind Arrow

Our goal in life should be to travel up in the state of mind arrow and make our minds calmer and peaceful.

The Spirituality Orange Level

The most powerful way to calm the mind is to meditate. Meditation leads us to the orange level.

Many people feel meditation is difficult to do, or they are not going to enjoy it. Meditation is a natural process and human beings are blessed to have been granted the ability to meditate. Meditation may be our greatest gift.

When we sit for meditation, we let the mind slow down naturally. When the mind slows down, when it is calmer, our mind, ego, identity, emotions, memories, and feelings all become silent and begin to loosen their hold on us. We become free of the mind’s hold on us.

Meditation is not something we do, it happens to us. It is the most fascinating aspect of human life. When the mind becomes completely quiet, we being to go beyond the mind, we transcend the mind. That is when the magic happens.

Our soul remains hidden within because of the incessant thoughts of the mind. The soul begins to peek through when the mind becomes silent. Just like the sun begins to peek through when the clouds break up. When the clouds are gone, the sun shines through brilliantly.

The Ultimate Purpose of Life

The greatest purpose of life is: “Quiet your hungry mind, let your happy soul shine!”

This the simplest and grandest spirituality statement. It is the ultimate purpose. Every human being on Earth regardless of religious beliefs, caste, creed, status, wealth, gender, and sexual identity has equal access to their spiritual ability. When we experience our soul, we achieve our purpose.

State of Mind

The journey of life is from the mind to the soul. The more the mind calms down the more we enjoy the true beauty of life.

God-Experience

When we the mind is completely quiet, the soul shines through in its absolute brilliance. We experience the infinite ocean of peace within. That is the state of pure ecstasy. It is the nirvana state, the ultimate Yog, the enlightenment state where we are in union with our soul and have gone beyond the identification with the mind. Then we have realized the purpose of life.

Every avatar of God, every prophet and messiah, every ancient sage in India, ever grand master around the globe, have described this state, this experience, also called by many as the GOD-Experience!

Ravi Kathuria on Louie B. Free Radio Show

Discussion on Inner-Peace

Mr. Louie Free invited me a second time on the Louie B. Free Radio Show hosted on NBC Affiliate 21 WFMJ of Youngstown-Warren, Ohio.

This interview is evidence of the connection that exists between human beings. I have never met Louie in person, yet, in just two interactions the connection is so strong. I can feel Louie and he can feel me. I greatly appreciate him. He has truly become my “spiritual friend.”

In this interview, we delve into the aspect of inner-peace that can make our life golden. The beauty is we can all experience that inner-peace right in our homes, living our daily lives.

Thank you, Louie, for hosting me!

— Ravi Kathuria, Author, Spirituality Book, “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.”

Full Interview — Louie Free & Ravi Kathuria

Video Introduction

Ravi: I was talking to someone about inner-peace. This is what he said to me. Well, look, Ravi, you're saying there is an ocean of peace, I have looked within, I see no sign of it.

Ravi: I got up this morning, looked in the mirror. I  see no ocean of peace within. You're just making this up. You're selling me snake oil.

Ravi: He continued, there is no ocean of peace, excuse me. And let me tell you, my spouse has no ocean of peace.

Ravi: So, I could be salvaged, but I promise you, my spouse...

Ravi: Even a Ravi cannot argue against that. Laughs.

Video Discussion

Louie: I really enjoy you. I have to tell you, I have a blast with you. I loved our conversation. I told my wife when I got home. I said I feel like Ravi's my new best friend. I said I have a blast with him. I really, really like him.

Louie: And you really got skills, by the way, of putting things together for YouTube. You've got to teach me someday.

Ravi: Yes. That video, I really love the way it has come out. So, thank you.

Louie: Thank you. This is thanks to you. You're just amazing.

Ravi: Thank you, Louie. Thank you for your feedback and for your positivity. It is so wonderful.

Louie: This is about you Ravi, again, right back at you. I'm going to say this is all about you and your work.

Louie: I'm honored to have you back on the Louie B. Free radio show Ravi Kathuria. Again, folks, I had him on a few weeks back and we talked about his incredible book, "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." — A Modern-Day Parable About Spirituality. And I love - at the top it says, "Wake up to realize the Universe's most amazing gift."

Louie: And you're a nice guy, you're a fun guy. You've got a great sense of humor. I hope you don't mind, Ravi, but our discussion that we had when we were chatting off air on the phone the other day.  You're vibrant. I have a blast with you. I really, really, really enjoy you as a human.

Ravi: Louie, the same here. You have such positive energy about yourself. Your questions are so valuable. Thank you for going through the book. I love the passages and the paragraphs in the book that you highlight and talk about.

Louie: All marked up in your book.

Ravi: It is amazing the things that you're picking up and you're choosing to highlight. I am so thankful to you for hosting me the first time and then inviting me back again today. Thank you.

Making Our Lives Richer

Louie: You know, I hope you don't get to the point where you get tired of me asking you to come back because I'm already thinking about the third. If I can be a conduit for the information that you bring, if I can be a conduit between you and my audience, and their lives become enriched, they feel better, they're doing better.

Their outlook is better. They're in touch, you know, spiritually. They're in touch with their soul better. Then that's a wonderful thing for me. If I can be the conduit between you and my audience, I'm doing a good job. I'm doing the right thing. I'll say I'm doing the right thing.

Let Us Support Each Other in Increasing Positivity

Ravi: You're doing the right thing. And we all, we are here, every one of us is here to support each other. I'm here to help your audience. Your audience and you are here to help me because when we all, all of us who thrive on positive energy and we hang around with other people who have positive energy, we become stronger. Our lives become more fulfilled.

Ravi: So, Louie, I am at your beck and call. You call me, I will show up. I have no choice. I talk about the Universe in the book. You are my Universe. So, if you demand, I have to show up, I have no choice.

Louie: I will politely ask. I'll never demand. I will politely ask.

Overcomplication has Deprived People of their Spiritual Destiny

Louie: Because again, the response I had from your last visit was, when people get that — I'm going to call it the “Ah, Ah” moment. That realization inside. So many things are out there, that are overcomplicated, or there's a reason that someone, I don't want to go too far out on this, but when I think about, you know, someone who says only through me you can get the answers, you've got to keep coming to me, as opposed to here's the tool kit. You're on your own. You've got it. Here it is. Here's the book, "Happy Soul, Hungry Mind." I love that about it, and when people get that and pick up on it, and have those “Ah Ah,” that recognition, the realization, it's like, wow, I get it now. That's a beautiful thing.

Spirituality is Yours without Preconditions and Prerequisites

Ravi: Yes. Thank you for bringing that up. Humanity over the ages has gotten this message that you have to be perfect to make spiritual progress. And I'm here to share spirituality is yours without preconditions and prerequisites. It already is there within you. You do not have to listen to anybody else judge you. You don't have to allow yourself to be judged by anybody else. If you focus on making spiritual progress, it will arrive. It is there in you.

Spirituality is as Natural as Physical Fitness

Ravi: It's like if you go to the gym and you start working out, you will start developing muscles. Now, on the way to the gym, there may be 10 people who stand and criticize you and tell you, you are never going to develop muscles, you're never going to become fit. They can keep talking, but it doesn't matter, it can never change the fact that if you exercise, and it doesn't have to be at the gym, you can exercise at home, if you begin exercising, you will become fit.

Now, you have to be a little careful. You don't overexercise and hurt yourself, but if you do it in a normal way, your body will respond. That is nature. That is what the Universe, that is what nature has given you. That ability to build and make a fit body is there in you. It exists.

It doesn't matter what anybody says or how anybody judges you. It makes no difference. It is the same with spirituality. It is there in you. It is there in all of us. And we can all make simple progress towards spirituality.

Spirituality is the Greatest Uniter

Ravi: I feel so good when I think about that because it truly unites all of us together. It brings everyone together and says we are all part of the spiritual umbrella. It doesn't matter which religion we follow. Doesn't matter if we follow a religion. You could be an atheist. I could be religious. And we are still under the same spiritual umbrella.

Ravi: How amazing is this, the whole world! Seven billion of us have the spiritual ability. Can you imagine that? Just think about what transformation we can bring about in this world if all of us begin to understand that spirituality is simple, and is available to us 24/7.

Louie: Beautiful. You're a beautiful human. "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." I want to talk a little bit more about your journey, if you will, a little bit more. We touched on it last time. And again, there's information up on your website about it. A little bit more about your journey, Ravi, if you don't mind.

Spirituality is Practical. It Helps us in our Daily Life.

Ravi: Yes. I am an ordinary man. I'm an ordinary guy living here.

Louie: You're not an ordinary guy, I'm going to stop you. You are an extraordinary guy. But go ahead. Go ahead.

Ravi: I appreciate you saying that Louie. But really, I'm an ordinary guy. I wake up in the morning, I have my own problems, I have my own stress and anxiety that I have to deal with.

Ravi: I have two businesses to run. I have to work on them. I am living a routine life. I have a family. I have a mortgage to pay. I have to take the car to get its oil change done. My point is I am not living in the Himalayas. I am not living in a monastery and telling others how life should be. I am living this life like the majority of the population on earth is living.

Ravi: We have always heard that if you want spirituality, then you have to be in the Himalayas or you have to be in a monastery. You have to be celibate. You have to do this. You have to do that. We've heard of all of those things.

Attain Spirituality in Our Own Homes

Ravi: My quest... and I say this in the book, I say this on my videos, my quest is to attain spiritual progress while I am living this simple life. I was spiritual since I was young. I was 20 years old, I was young, I was handsome, I blinked my eyes, and here I am 30 years later, 30 years went by so fast.

Our Life Can Become a Lot Richer with Spirituality

Ravi: I look at my life, I have had a lot of ups and downs in life. When you have your own business, you go through that. I worked for corporate America and corporate America is not an easy place to survive either.

I would have gone through those ups and downs, but as I look back at it, I say, "Look, Ravi, you knew about spirituality when you were 14 and 15, you were already inclined towards that. If you Ravi," now I'm talking to myself. It may sound a little weird, but I like to talk to myself in the third person because it's this out-of-body, objective assessment of yourself.

I say, "Look, Ravi, if you had spent your 30 years, once you became a teenager and you understood stuff, if you had practiced more spirituality, if you had paid more attention to being peaceful, this very life of yours could have been so much more golden. You would have still gone through the vagaries of life, you would have still gone through the roller coaster and the tensions and pressures, but if you had focused more time and more conscious efforts towards the inner peace that is in you, your life would have been so much better."

Our Life is Our Most Valuable Asset and Yet We Spend It on Triviality

Ravi: That is the awakening, that realization is very important for me.

Ravi: That's really why I had to take a pause in my life five years ago because I was back in this rat race. I could have focused more on my business. And I like to make money, I will admit that.

Louie: And you're successful with your business.

Ravi: Yes. I could have spent more time on growing my business and start a project, but I realized, I could go out and over the next 20, 30 years... I read articles, which say, I hope I'm right on this, Warren Buffett started when he was 50, and then by 80, he has a net worth of 80 billion dollars or whatever that amount is.

I could begin to do that, I could say, in my own assessment and objective view, I have a billion-dollar idea. I can develop this project and it will generate a billion dollars. But I have to trade that with, I have to give the next 20 years of my life. I'm not going to be able to generate a billion dollars in two months or even two years. I probably have to give my next 20 years to generate a billion dollars. Now, think about that, I would be 74 and I would have a billion dollars in the bank.

Ravi: My life expectancy I would assign myself at that point would be between 10 to 20 years. I would have all that money, but I would have gone through this life of tension, and stress and anxiety, and pushing. What have I given up, what is the price I have paid for it?

Ravi: The price, the commodity that I'm paying to earn that billion dollars is my life. There is nothing more precious than my life. We all understand that.

Ravi: It's amazing, I can pick anybody off the street, and I say, "Do you realize your life is the most precious thing you have?"

Ravi: They will go, "Of course, dah, tell me something I don't know. Why did you stop me?"

Ravi: Life is so precious, and I say, "What are you about to do? Where are you going?"

Ravi: He or she says, "I'm in this rat race because I'm constantly trying to do something, either because my mind is forcing me to do it or my family or friends. I'm living this rat race and I'm really overlooking the most precious aspect of life."

Ravi: It's not as if we need to stop making money. There is no problem in earning a billion dollars. If you have the capability to earn a billion dollars, then absolutely, by all means, you should earn a billion dollars.

Real Wealth is Peace of Mind. Real Fortune is Reveling in that Peace.

Ravi: But what you should not do, is pay the price of not having your peace of mind.

The real valuable asset that we all need to have is our peace of mind and revel in that peace every day.

Ravi: You say to yourself, yes, I have to go out and work on generating a billion dollars or that ten thousand dollars or that hundred thousand dollars depends on what profession you are in and what skill you have. The amount doesn't matter, and the type of work doesn't matter, what we have to remember is that every day we must connect with the peace within.

Ravi: If we do that, then this life will beautiful. Without it, life is lacking. If I gave you a cheesecake and the cheesecake had less sugar in it, you're going to say, excuse me, there is something missing in here. If I give you a milkshake, it doesn't have sugar in it either, or I give you food that's not salted properly. Or I give you a beautiful picture, but the colors are not vibrant.

Ravi: When we begin to experience the peace within, the colors of life become richer. The tastes of life become richer, the relationships you are in, become richer.

Our Obsession with Money, Career, Business Sometimes Robs Us of Our Lives

Ravi: I created two companies. I have a consulting and executive coaching firm, but I didn't have to travel. I chose not to travel, I like the concept of being available for my family. My travel was limited, I didn't really pick clients that were out of Houston that much. Occasionally I did. As far as I can remember, in the 30 years, I have had a majority of my dinners with my family at our dining table.

Ravi: I was there physically. The problem is I might as well have been in Philadelphia or New York or San Francisco. Because I was not there mentally. I was sitting and having dinner, thinking about my business challenges, my business issues, and that is what most of us do. We're having dinner, but our thoughts are somewhere else. We are not experiencing that food, we are not experiencing those relationships.

Ravi: So many of us are blessed to have a nice family and we have good relationships. Yet we are not truly relishing it because we are going through life in this little frenzy. We are not stopping and saying, I need to look at my family and relish them.

We Must Relish Life

Ravi: We all must relish life. We all must stop and relish life. You could be really busy, you could be a busy executive working in Manhattan, but no matter how busy you are, you could be CEO of Citibank, you've got 30 seconds to look at your family and register that memory. Every one of us does.

In spite of Modern-Day Comforts We Have Stress & Anxiety

Ravi: Living in the United States, we are living in the most powerful, most rich country in the world. If you go and tell somebody who is living in a poor country, who doesn't have much money and say, well, I am suffering from so much stress and anxiety.

Louie: Yeah, yeah, yeah,

Ravi: They'll think we're so ungrateful. I cannot blame them if they were to judge us. They would ask, "Excuse me, why do you have stress and anxiety? Do you have to walk 10 miles to fetch water?"

Ravi: I go, "No."

Ravi: "Do you have to sleep on the ground, which has stones on it? Do you have to be afraid of wild animals hunting you down in the night?"

Ravi: I go, "No."

Ravi: They say, "Well, what is your stress? Maybe you don't get enough food."

Ravi: I say, "No, no, no, I can go to a grocery store and I have all the food."

Ravi: They say, "Why are you having stress and anxiety?"

Ravi: It'd be very difficult for us to communicate that to someone who has very little means. We have all the comforts, and yet stress and anxiety rob us of our own life.

We Must Live a Better, Lower-Stress Life

Ravi: This realization is what I was coming to, I have to live a better life and I want to share that. There is a way for us to live a better life, because that peace that exists within us is available to us 24/7. We just need to learn to connect with it. And then life can become so much better. It will start improving and the challenges that we face in life, we will be able to face them a little better. We are not going to get beaten down so much.

Connecting with Our Peace

Ravi: Sometimes life can be excruciating. I get beaten down and then I return back to my place of peace and I connect with my peace. And then I wake up and I go, you know, that's a bad situation, but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it was.

Ravi: That is what we need to do. We need to connect with our peace, and that really is my journey.

My Journey is to Share: Spirituality is Simple & Practical

Ravi: I have written this book to share, to take out all these layers that people have put on spirituality and made it complicated and complex. They have confused it with religion. They have made it so difficult. I wanted to make it very simple and tell everyone on Earth this is yours. This is yours since the day you were born. Connect with it and live a far more beautiful life. Why not take advantage?

It's like every one of us is walking around carrying a billion dollars in our pocket. Yet we are going around scrounging up some money, never tapping into that billion dollars that is there with us already, and that is ours. Why not exercise what you already have?

That's the most beautiful thing, and it's a reminder that I need to give to myself every day. I'm on the same journey as everyone else, I need to remind myself to be peaceful. I need to remind myself and say life will throw curveballs at us and it's okay. That is the purpose of life to throw curveballs.

Ravi: If I connect with my peace, if I feel my peace, then I will deal with life better and I will enjoy and relish life better. My mind will slow down where I will be able to look out the window and say, oh, it's such a beautiful day outside. And relish that and register that. That is the journey I'm on. That is all I want to share with everyone, and I sincerely believe that it can help everyone.

Ravi: It doesn't matter what your situation, this message can help everyone on Earth. We all have it. How beautiful is that?

Louie: How beautiful is that? Folks, you see why I love this guy. That's a beautiful message, Ravi. A wake up call for us. One of the things you said about the choices that you made to be with your family, you want dinner with your family, choices that you make to have that and then to recognize it and then to get that in, as you say about videotaping, it's the imprint on our minds, the positives, correct?

We Mistreat Our Most Precious Asset — Our Life

Ravi: Yes. Yes. It is amazing. Life is the most precious thing we have, yet we mistreat our own life. We overlook it. We are not giving it the importance. We're chasing things. It's okay to pursue a career, it's okay to build a business, it's okay to make money, but what you never do, you never do that at the cost of your own peace.

We Must Make Inner-Peace Our Top Priority

Ravi: If all of us reminded ourselves of that and say my number one priority is my inner peace. Then the rest of our life falls into place.

Ravi: There are so many articles written about work-life balance. Really, it's about prioritization. Do you prioritize your own peace? If you prioritize your own peace, then the rest of your life will fit together. It will all come together, the pieces of the puzzle will fit in.

Sometimes I coach CEOs, I coach executives and business owners. They're so confused about their priorities. I tell them, why are you in business and they look at me and they go. You're not very smart, are you? I say, why do you say that? They say it's obvious I'm in business to make money. I go, okay. I ask them, there is a million ways to make money, why are you in this business? And I see the color of their face leave. They have not thought about that. Why am I in this business now?

Ravi: That is a very difficult conversation to have. It seems like a very simple question. I was talking to a group of CEOs and franchise owners and a man after I had spoken, came to me. This was just a 30-minute talk. He came to me and said, "You know what, Ravi? I hate the business I am in. It's making good money, but I just hate it, I don't like it, and I had not quite realized that until I heard you speak."

Ravi: I felt bad because this man had just realized how much he needed to change his life and I could see how overwhelmed he felt. It's not easy to walk away from a business and a franchise that was making money. But it was not something that he had his heart in it. It's not something he was enjoying. He was making money, but he was spending his life.

We all have to understand that we have a deep yearning within us. Everything that we do in life, we have to calm down and think about what do I want? Because the mind says, do this, do that.

You will listen to your parents. You will listen to friends. You read something up and say, oh, maybe I should do this, maybe I should do that. But there is a deep yearning within you. Connect with that, calm down so you can hear that deep voice within and say, this is what my life needs to be about.

Then work on it. Everything that you do in life, this is a litmus test that I ask people to think about, whatever you are doing in life, does it make you more peaceful or does it make you less peaceful? Because if it makes you less peaceful, that is a big price to pay.

Choose the activities that make you more peaceful. Which are the activities which would make you more peaceful? Those that are in congruence, that are in the same frequency of your deeper yearnings, your deeper desires.

Then life will start becoming golden because you will see life through a different perspective, you will not see life in this fabricated plastic manner in which you are driving yourself crazy. Ask yourself, I'm doing all of this, but do I feel content?

We need to wake up. We need to wake up. There is nothing more precious that you have than your own life. Please do not live a misdirected life because you have some notions. Just calm down. The answers will come. Just calm down and connect with your peace, and then you will begin to see what you need to do, what makes you more peaceful.

Louie: It's beautiful. Ravi, it's absolutely beautiful. The website, HappySoulHungryMind.com. We urge you to visit it, we've got links up.

Louie: Ravi Kathuria is my guest on Brain food from the Heartland on the Louie B. Free Radio show.

Louie: When you say that, it makes me think of when people, in that race, where are they going, because everybody's got challenges. When people say, well that's ideal, well he's successful, well, he's got that. You never know what's going on with anyone else. You look at people, you don't see the pain that they may have, someone may have just had a bad medical diagnosis, or their dog died, or their cat’s ill, or job or economic issues. None of those preclude you from finding that peace, and then you're saying, answers, things open up for you.

Without Peace of Mind Life can become a Burden

Ravi: Yes, absolutely. I forget her name, the lady who was a billionairess who had, I think, a business of making women's handbags and other accessories. I think she was worth one point seven billion dollars, had a husband and kids. I don't remember the details exactly. But this happened maybe a year and a half, two years ago. She killed herself. The rest of us are wanting one point seven billion dollars, here is somebody who has it. I don't know if she had medical issues or there was dissatisfaction with life, but there are so many cases we hear about celebrities. We heard about Anthony Bourdain, so successful. I don't know what mental issues he had.

Ravi: The fact is if we do not have that peace of mind then we can be in the best of situations and we still want to leave that situation.

Louie: That was a good example, Anthony Bourdain. Where most people would say, I wish I had his life, I wish I had his life, he gets to travel the world.

Do Now Wish For Someone Else’s Life

Ravi: Yes. I actually made a video on YouTube. It is titled, do not wish for someone else's life.

Louie: That's beautiful.

Ravi: To your point, Louie, do not wish for someone else's life because you do not know what they are going through.

Ravi: I remember one day, I came home. My wife drove me home and my car was standing outside my house. Usually, I come home in my own car. I like my car. It's standing outside my house. I see my house. And I say, "Oh, my God. The man living in this house, driving that car must be so happy, he must be so lucky."

Ravi: Anybody driving by would think that about me, but they have no clue as to my struggles and my stresses and my anxieties. What we see on the surface is not the entire picture. You look at movie stars. We are living in this YouTube age where movie stars are happy to showcase their homes. Lifestyles of the rich and famous. But we shouldn't be watching lifestyles of rich and famous because all it does is makes us less peaceful.

Louie: Yeah.

Ravi: Think about that. You watch somebody else's beautiful home on Palm Beach, and you say this is such an incredible house. Guess what it does, it gives you joy for a certain moment, but then it makes you feel a little deficient. Ask yourself, why am I watching that? Why am I paying with my peace? It's a big price you're paying. They show this movie star, and they say the movie star has three homes like this, not just one home.

Louie: They have three homes with 12, 10 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms.

Ravi: Yes, and they lived in that house for two weeks in the year. But we have no idea what that movie star is going through. Movie stars, I write about this in my book, just a little paragraph about how much chronic stress they suffer when their movies start failing.

Ask the biggest movie star when they have three movies fail in a row. Talk to them and see the self-doubt they begin to develop. They could be worth a hundred million dollars, but suddenly they begin to lose their confidence and they get irritated with life.

I've read accounts of movie stars who have depression because they're afraid they're going to stop getting the adulation. People will stop following them.

The movie business is like any other business. If you're successful, you're successful. The day your movies start bombing, producers stop calling, and you are all alone, lonely because nobody is looking up to you. In the movie business, people come and go so fast. We look at the big stars, but we have no idea the next tier down how many people come and go.

Everyone in life has challenges, everyone, it doesn't matter how much money they have, it doesn't matter how much success they have, we can only see the outside.

Our Life Should be Centered on Our Self-Peace

Ravi: When we wish for somebody else's life we pay a very expensive price in terms of our own peace.

Ravi: We need to accomplish things in life, we need to pursue success in life, we need to pursue a good living, but it has to be centered in our own self peace. Then life is golden. Then it doesn't matter whether you have 100 million dollars, or you have a thousand dollars because you're coming from your own peace. That life, it's the most beautiful life. You are then living. You are then living!

Louie: So beautifully said, Ravi. Again, you're just incredible. HappySoulHungryMind.com. There are so many things I want to address. When you mentioned about the housewives, their shows, and all of that, I get concerned about some of the culture today with social media and the Kardashians, for example. I obviously don't know them personally. They may be very nice, generous, wonderful, spiritual people. I will tell you something, and I've told this story a number of times on air. I had an aunt that died a few years back and at 99 years old, by the way, and she was in a nursing home. She was losing, she was having some early dementia or Alzheimer's issues. She always watched the news and always wanted to talk with me about politics and the news. I did have a good relationship with her growing up.

Louie: I walked into her room. I go see her every day after the show. She said, "Louis," she said, "I'm upset." I said, "I can see that." I said, "What's going on?" She said, "I'm watching the news." And she said, "I hear the name the Kardashians. I don't know why they're on the news." She always wanted to know the news. Try explaining to someone that's got a little bit of dementia, or just some brain processing issues, explain to someone, if somebody came here from another planet, tell them why the Kardashians are so popular. Why were they newsworthy? Yet when we hear the terms like that or someone wants to be an influencer or become wealthy, I'm not sure why you want that life, or you strive for those riches without looking at the riches within. Am I making any sense?

Ravi: Absolutely, Louie. You bring up a great point and it connects with what we talked about. You talked about the Housewives show. I haven't really watched it a whole lot. But the few minutes that I have watched, obviously, these are very affluent women, affluent families, because they're talking about their husband buying a yacht and stuff like that or buying a jet. And then they're discussing how unhappy they are, and I'm making this example up, on the type of jet that the husband or the wife bought or the jewelry that she bought.

Ravi: The show is about women who are complaining and fighting about and feeling unhappy about their relationships. We're watching that. I hope the producers of housewives don't call me, but if they did, this is what I would suggest. It's a popular show, why don't you start making the show a little bit more positive, so people find something good that makes them more peaceful through the messaging of the show, as opposed to you watching people who are complaining constantly.

Ravi: Even when you have all the riches in the world, our attitude, our perspective on life, really determines the quality of our life. When we connect with the peace within, our quality-of-life changes, even though the circumstances of our life have not changed.

Ravi: With my very special guest, Ravi Kathuria. Again, I cannot urge you enough to get the book, read the book, go to the website, HappySoulHungryMind.com.

Connection with Our Inner-Peace

Louie: That connection, we all can make it. Talk a little bit about that connection you were talking about. We all need to do it. We all need to connect. Easier than others would want to let you believe. They want to make things more complex as opposed to more direct.

Ravi: Yes. There is within us, within all of us, an ocean of peace. I shared that concept in a video, if you are listening to that, you say, well, look, Ravi, you are saying there is an ocean of peace, I have looked within, I see no sign of it. I got up this morning, I looked in the mirror, I don't see no ocean of peace within.

Louie: Yeah.

Ravi: You're just making this up. You're selling me snake oil. There is no ocean of peace. Excuse me. And let me tell you, my spouse has no ocean of peace. So, I could be salvaged, but I promise you my spouse has no ocean of peace within. You go, even a Ravi cannot argue against that.

Ravi: So, this is the example I give. If you watch the ocean, at the surface, the ocean has large waves, very violent waves, there could be a storm and you say, well, the ocean is not peaceful, but if you travel down to the depth of the ocean, if you reach the floor of the ocean, it's completely serene and peaceful.

Ravi: It doesn't matter to the floor of the ocean what is happening on the surface. We live lives where we are held hostage by our mind, our mind is constantly running. It creates these violent waves. The problem is we have lived our life, we have associated our living with the mind and its constant vibrations and its constant waves. We have associated and we have come to assume that is who we are, but that's not who we are. We are the peace at the floor of the ocean.

Ravi: What we have to understand is that these waves will keep happening. When you live in the world you're going to face challenges, you're going to face incidents, and that will create the waves, I can never take those waves away. I can never go to the ocean and say there will never be a storm, so your waves on the surface will be completely calm. That's not going to happen. I can never make that happen. That is against nature. It will keep happening. It has to happen.

Ravi: But if we go beyond the mind, then at the bottom we are going to find peace exists. It is existing in every one of us.

Ravi: Think about the purpose of religion. The purpose, as I see for religion, is to help you calm the mind. You could be someone who doesn't believe in religion and you can still calm the mind. Religion is one way to help you calm the mind.

If you do community service, you go down to the food kitchen and you cook and you serve the homeless and you do it without expectation, you do not expect them to even thank you. You do not expect them to smile because if you say, oh, I served this guy, and he didn't even smile back. That's going to cause consternation. But you say it doesn't matter whether they smile back at me or not, whether they say thank you, ma'am, or thank you, sir, it doesn't matter. I am going to do my bit and I will do it selflessly. And I don't do it because of social media. I don't stand outside and take a picture and tell my friends I was at the soup kitchen.

Louie: Yeah. Look at me. Look how good of a person.

Ravi: Yeah. And then this homeless man is standing. He's hungry. And you say, you can wait a few more minutes, let me get the right camera angle as I'm serving you.

Ravi: If you do it without expectations, if you do community service and tell nobody, you don't call your mother and say, look, mom, I went and did this, you don't try and impress your kids and say, look, kids, take my example. You do community service just for the sake of doing it with no expectations. Guess what happens to your mind? Your problems that exist, when you come home, those problems are still there, but you have a little spring in your step.

Louie: Beautiful.

Ravi: You look at that and you go, yes, problems. Hello, hi problems, how are you? You're still here. I thought you'd be gone.

Louie: Was hoping you'd be gone but you're still here.

Ravi: Yeah, but it's all right. You're an unwelcome guest. It's okay. I just had a break from you, and I can deal with you a little better now because you were getting to me earlier, but now I can deal with you.

Ravi: Religion and devotion, I should use the word devotion. Devotion can help you calm the mind down. Community service, which is selfless, can calm the mind down. You can do philosophical thinking and analysis, you can take a scripture, it doesn't have to be scripture, you can take a philosophical book and you can analyze life. That can help you calm down. These three help the mind to calm down. But the most superior of all of them is the method of meditation. I talked about this with Louie the first time, and there is a video on my YouTube channel and my website.

Louie:  HappySoulHungryMind.com.

Ravi: Yes, thank you. HappySoulHungryMind.com.

Ravi: We all need to meditate. Meditation is simple, it's easy. We can all do it. I know a lot of people who get scared by it. There is nothing to get scared. You will form the habit and over time you will learn to go beyond the mind and then as we go beyond the mind, as we go down from the violent waves, and deeper into the ocean, we begin to experience the stillness that exists in all of us.

Ravi: You have stillness in you right now. You're probably driving somewhere or at work or at home, and you have all these challenges. Your boss is not happy, your kids are not happy, your spouse is not happy. It doesn't matter. All those problems are going on, but deep within, you still have stillness, and that stillness is the most beautiful thing that you possess. There is no greater wealth than your own stillness. Expose yourself, enjoy the wealth that you have been given. Wake up. Enjoy the wealth that you have been given.

Ravi: When I wrote the introduction for my book, I shared this example. I said imagine someone dear to you, say, your mother gave you a gift. It's a box and it is covered with very fancy wrapping paper. Very nice, decorative wrapping paper.

Ravi: You are so mesmerized by the wrapping paper, you spend all the time playing with the wrapping paper and never open the box to see the gift inside. And she has given you a very valuable gift.

Ravi: Now you go, excuse me, Ravi, could you not have developed a better example because only a child, only a toddler is going to play with the wrapping paper and forget what is inside the box?

Ravi: But my friends. Louie's listeners, that is what we all are doing with our life. This material world is just the wrapping paper. We are so consumed by it. The real gift that the Universe, God, nature, life, has given us is this peace within, the stillness, because when we experience it, when we connect with that peace, then we understand the splendor of life. That is the gift. And guess what, we are not opening the box, so my friends — open the box.

Louie: Open the box, open the box. You are just such a beautiful human, and I do want to, I would like to maybe next time, soon, if you've got the time to talk more about meditation.

Louie: I would urge people go to your website. You've got so much information. You've got a lot of videos up on your YouTube channel. Go there. Experience it, get the book and read the book and share it.

Louie: Makes me think of how they always talk about, if you're on an airplane and the masks come down, you've got to put your mask on first, even if you want to help others, because if you're not breathing, obviously, you're not going to be able to help others. If you're trying to get a child's mask on or someone else's mask on, you're losing oxygen, you've got to first, if you want to be good in the world, you need to take care of yourself first.

Ravi: Yes. You must take care of yourself because if you say, my family members are sick, and I have to take care of them. You can take care of them if you are going to be healthy. If you fall sick, you cannot take care of them. You will become a burden on the family.

Louie: If you don't eat nutritious food, you're not going to be able to help feed your family. Caring for yourself.

Ravi: So, you have to do this. You have to become the beacon. It's like the batten. I wrote this book and I talked about this last time, Spiritual Truths showed up. They revealed themselves as I was writing the book. Now, I need to go out and let others know about it.

Ravi: And you have to do the same thing. You are hearing these discussions that Louie and I are having, and you need to share that. You need to share that with yourself, very importantly, because your mind needs to listen to that, and then help others.

Louie: You can help others if you energize yourself.

Ravi: That is all we have to do. We must start helping each other. You might think I'm an author, and Louie was kind, he called me extraordinary.

Louie: You are extraordinary. I'm not going to argue with you. You are extraordinary because you want to share it.

Ravi: I want to share it. And the thing is, you might think I want to share it because I want to do others a favor. That's absolutely wrong. I say this in the book, I say this in the videos. When I share, when I talk about these things, you know, who's listening first? It's not even Louie. It's not even you, our listeners. Who is listening first? Me. The words are reaching my ears before they reach anyone else's ears. And so, the more I listen to the messages of peace and spirituality, guess what, they are leaving impressions on me. So, you, Mr. Louie and your listeners are doing me a favor by letting me come on and share these things so I can listen. And when you go out and you share, guess what, who is listening, you don't have to be worried about, well, somebody is listening to you or not. You don't have to worry about whether they're paying attention or whether they value it or not, because guess what, you are listening.

Ravi: We all have the peace within.

Louie: You are extraordinary. Ravi, you are extraordinary.

Ravi: At your core. You are peace.

Ravi: Be who you are.

Ravi: Be peace. Be peace.

Louie: I just love you. You're incredible. I'm going to be getting in touch with you this afternoon about doing this again soon.

Louie: Again, go to the website, folks, HappySoulHungryMind.com. It's so important. And I should say, never has there been a time like we need it now, but it seems very clear in the world, we need it. We've always needed it and you can access it. It's there, and it's our gift that we all have.

Ravi: Yes.

Louie: Ravi, thank you. I get emotional. Thank you.

Ravi: No, thank you. Thank you, sir. Thank you.

Louie: Let's do this again very, very soon.

Ravi: Absolutely. Absolutely.

Louie: You are extraordinary, and the message is so beautiful and so important for people. And next time I want to talk about some of the responses that I get. Talk more about it.

Ravi: Yes. I would love to hear the responses, what people are saying. If this is resonating with them.

Louie: It is resonating.

Ravi: If it's simple enough, if people can understand and we can start taking the steps, I would love to hear what they say. This is way too important. There is nothing more important than this.

Louie: I agree. Ravi, thank you. You are extraordinary.

Ravi: Thank you, sir. Thank you so much. Thank you.

Louie: Thank you. What an extraordinary human being he is. What a beautiful man. I just love talking with him.

— Ravi Kathuria, Author, Spirituality Book, “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.”

Full Interview — William S. Bike & Ravi Kathuria

Video Introduction

Ravi: Energy cannot be destroyed nor created, only can be transformed. I think it is the biggest spiritual statement. People ask me sometimes, do spirituality and science go together? Well, science is about truth and spirituality is about truth.

Video Discussion

Ravi: Welcome. Thank you for joining us.

Ravi: I am Ravi Kathuria, the author of a modern parable on non-religious spirituality called, "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." We're joined here today with Mr. William S. Bike, who recently reviewed the book for me.

Ravi: Bill, thank you for joining us today. I appreciate you being here today.

Bill: Thank you for having me. Ravi, it's very good to be here.

About Mr. William S. Bike

Ravi: Thank you, sir. Bill, I understand you have a very cherished career, a long, successful career. So why don't you share briefly what you have accomplished?

Bill: Well, thank you very much for asking. I live in Chicago, Illinois, where I'm the associate editor for a local newspaper called Gazette Chicago. And I've been with the Gazette since 1983. In addition, I've written and edited several books. One is about street names on the near west side of Chicago called, "Streets in the Near West Side." And one is about running an election campaign called, "Winning Political Campaigns." In addition, I'm scheduled to have a book about the Chicago Cubs baseball team coming out later this year. I'm looking forward to that.

Ravi: Oh, wow. Congratulations on everything you have accomplished and all the best.

Bill: Thank you. Thank you so much.

Ravi: I know how it is to write books. They are almost like little babies. You get pregnant.

Bill: Well, you know, I hadn't planned on writing a book about the Cubs, but with the coronavirus last year, I found I had some more time. And so, it gave me some time to do it. And I think it'll be fun once it comes out.

Ravi: Wonderful. We wish you all the best.

Feedback on Spirituality Book “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.”

Ravi: Let's talk about "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." You reviewed the book. What is your feedback on the book? What was your takeaway from the book? What struck you or stuck with you after you finished?

God is the Universe. The Universe is God!

Bill: What struck me the most is when you have the character talk about, God is the universe, and the universe is God. That's so logical. It's not something I ever thought of before, but God is everywhere, the Universe is everywhere. Both of them are infinite. Both of them have no beginning and no end. It just makes sense that they're one and the same. And I had never ever thought of that before. If there's one thing I'll take away from the book, I think it's that.

Immortality and Life After Death

Bill: Another revelation in the book is, we all know Einstein said energy can never be destroyed.

Ravi: Yes.

Bill: We humans are energy, so we can never be destroyed. So, if you think about it, that's actually scientific proof of life after death. That proof lets you worry less because whatever happens, we're immortal. We're energy, always going to be there. We're energy, we're going to be everywhere, so we also are the Universe. We're also part of God.

Bill: You take these big questions that mankind has wrestled with for millennia and you explain them in this book in a very simple way that sticks with you. I found that very, very meaningful.

Ravi: I appreciate you picking those two points. Einstein is the most renowned physicist that we know about and he's a scientist. When he declared matter cannot be destroyed nor created, energy cannot be destroyed nor created only can be transformed, I think it is the biggest spiritual statement.

Science and Spirituality

Ravi: People ask me sometimes, do spirituality and science go together? Well, science is about truth and spirituality is about truth. This statement that Einstein has made is the biggest spiritual statement, because once you understand that, and it's very difficult to comprehend that matter and energy can never be destroyed because we have seen it getting destroyed. But now we understand, it's not getting destroyed, it's only getting transformed. And from there comes immortality. Human beings are so focused on immortality, you begin to appreciate that we are immortal because we are energy and the Universe is just the energy and matter, it has always existed and will always exist. You cannot destroy the universe and you cannot create it.

Bill: Right, exactly.

Bill: People think science and spirituality are in conflict. I never felt that way in my entire life. Looking at the Universe and how it compares to God and looking at energy, shows us science and spirituality are actually one thing.

Ravi: Yes, and then if we extrapolate that, if the Universe has always existed and if the Universe is infinite. There is only one other entity that we can think about that has the same qualities.

Ravi: Which is why, whenever I think about God is the universe and the Universe is God — I love that you picked that as your first point — it is outstanding, and it can change the world.

Bill: Yeah, if people realize that, I think they would feel a little more comforted knowing that whatever happens, they're going to be around forever, and things are going to be okay.

Ravi: Yes.

Bill: They're part of God. How can anything be bad?

Journey from the Mind to the Soul

Ravi: Yes. So, what else did you find interesting in the book?

Bill: You say something to the equivalent of like the mind is like a bouncer and the soul is the star. You use the analogy of going into a club, like a dance club. You've got to get past the bouncer. But just because you get in the club, it doesn't mean you automatically get to meet the singer. There's still more work to do. You can, but you can't do that work until you get past the bouncer. So, the mind is like the bouncer and it's different than the soul. The mind deals with material things on this plane, you've got to get past that. You've got to get more in touch with your soul. But even when you do, you know, that's not the goal. It's only the beginning. Once you're in the club, if you want to meet the singer, you've got to figure out a way to get there.

Bill: Talking about the mind, I like what you say, no matter how good your life is, the mind compares you to others who have more. That's so true because we need to learn that our mind sometimes creates problems. We shouldn't compare ourselves to others because we're all on different paths. Yet people always want to compare themselves to other people. This person has more money. This person has a better girlfriend. That person has a better car.

Bill: We're all on different paths. And it's only something that our mind creates. The soul doesn't really care how much money we've got. You know, what kind of car we have. So, you know, the book is a good reminder.

Bill: You say in the book, when the mind is engaged, we experience the material world, both its pleasures and its pains. But when we get past the mind, we experience the soul and the spiritual bliss that it's capable of. That's just good advice.

Bill: You mentioned, too, that some people say the world is merely a simulation. We talked about Einstein before and Shakespeare said that too. Shakespeare said the world is a stage and the people in it are merely players.

Bill: We live in the material world. We've got to deal with it. But it's not the most important thing. Getting in touch with our soul is the most important thing. You say in the book, enjoy the world, but don't be addicted to it. It's a very good point. People think that they can't both enjoy the life of the mind and spiritual bliss, but they're not in conflict. Your mind enjoys the world. Your soul enjoys the bliss. It's like having comfortable shoes and a comfortable shirt. You can have both. They're not in conflict.

Ravi: Yes. Absolutely. Thank you for picking up these points. I love listening to them.

Ravi: The points you make, that you have honed on, are really important points. We become trapped by our own minds.

Bill: Right.

Spiritual Dimension

Ravi: We have to understand the mind is very important. We need the mind to interact with the material world. But that is the purpose of the mind, and there is a dimension that exists beyond the mind. The spiritual dimension exists in all of us, but most of us are not tapping into it.

Bill: Exactly.

Ravi: It's like we all have the ability to swim, but only a few of us actually go through and learn swimming. Everyone can swim.

Bill: And only a few of us, who are in the lake, actually go to the center of the lake. So, you know, once we're in the water, we're not done. We've got more to do.

Ravi: We got more to do. When we quiet the mind, and then this energy which is within us, this permanent, everlasting energy that is there in all of us, we call it the spirit or the soul or the atma or whatever name, we begin to experience that. That is so powerful, that is the most amazing aspect of life. That is the journey from the mind to the soul.

Ravi: I love spirituality, I love talking about it because it is non-religious, it doesn't matter what religion someone follows. Every one of us is spiritual.

Religion versus Spirituality

Bill: Well, I think that's a good segue to our next point, because another analogy you make, and by the way, you can tell I love the analogies because they really make things simple. You have one of the characters say religion is like ground transport to the airport. And so that means religion is not the end, it's the means. Once you reach the airport, once you reach your soul, you don't really need the means of transport, which is religion anymore.

Bill: Religion is not spirituality. More and more people are realizing that. More and more people describe themselves as spiritual instead of religious. The modern polls show people do not really get involved with organized religion to the extent they used to in the past. Yet they all feel that they're spiritual. Whether they read your book or not, I think more and more people are understanding this.

Bill: Some religions put down materialism, but as we talked about before, you say, enjoying the material world and spiritual bliss can coexist. That's a message most people are looking for. Nobody wants to give all their material possessions away and go live in a hut in the desert. But we all want to soothe our souls. So, yes, you point out, in fact, if we're happier in the material world, it helps our spiritual progress. And again, the analogies you used are just great.

Ravi: Yeah, great point, Sir. Great point. Thank you for picking that up. Many times, people find religion or spirituality because they're going through troublesome times. But what happens is as soon as their troubles lift their interest in religion or spirituality goes away.

Bill: Exactly. Just like you don't care about being on the bus to the airport once you get to the airport.

Ravi: That's right. So, the idea is to pursue spirituality when you're happy in life because that progress is real progress. It's like if you end up in the emergency room and then you say, I'm going to start exercising, it's a little too late.

Bill: Exactly.

Ravi: The first thing you need to do is stabilize yourself and get yourself out of the emergency room, the best time to exercise is not when you're sick, it is when you're healthy.

Bill: Exactly.

Ravi: Spirituality is the same thing.

Ravi: I love the points that have resonated with you because you're absolutely right, we do not have to retire to the Himalayas. We are very blessed to have very comfortable lives in the modern era. We don't have to grow our food or bring our own water. Everything is available when we walk into a grocery store and we have all the food we need. Most of us who are living in developed countries don't have to walk 20 miles to bring water.

Ravi: We don't have to give up all our comforts and go sleep on a rock bed. We can sleep in our comfortable beds because comfort has nothing to do with spirituality.

Bill: Right.

Ravi: Spirituality is about quieting the mind. If we quiet the mind, the soul will shine through, it is natural, it is automatic, it has no choice like the sun will shine through if the clouds depart.

Bill: I think we all want to quiet our minds these days. It's a busy world, and so I think that's a good message.

Ravi: Yes. Thank you, sir. I appreciate the feedback that you have given, the points that you picked, this is music for me to hear. Thank you.

Book Writing Style

Ravi: Did you like the style? I ask people that because the book is a conversation between Travis and Rishi, and sometimes, it's a little contentious. They have their own challenges. Is that a good style? Or should it have been a plain narration? In most spiritual books, there's not really much discussion or debate going on. “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.” is written as a conversation.

Bill: I think that's actually why the book works because it's a conversation between two characters. It doesn't come off like a lecture. I don't think anybody wants a lecture. We had plenty of those in school and we get them from our bosses and whatever. I don't think anybody wants a lecture anymore. It's two friends talking. But you know what, as the reader, you're the third friend. You know, you're not saying anything, but you're a part of the conversation. You're learning. I think it's a great construction. And if it had just been a lecture, I don't think it would have worked. The conversation with the two friends, like I said, you're the third friend as the reader, and that's pretty nice.

Ravi: I appreciate that feedback because I have wondered about that. I like to write stories because it helps, the backdrop of a story allows you to test the concepts much more thoroughly. If you're just writing about the concepts and there is no challenging voice, nothing to challenge it, you can write whatever.

Bill: You've got the two characters and, the one is telling the other about these things. But the second character doesn't just automatically accept it, he argues a little bit. If you're reading the book and you feel some of the same things the character feels and you're arguing too, you don't have to do it in a vacuum because the character is doing it for you.

Easy Read. Enjoying Life.

Ravi: Yes. Absolutely. I love everything you have shared. If you were to meet someone who has not read the book and you had to tell them in 30 seconds why they should read the book, what would you recommend?

Bill: Well, it's not a difficult read. That's what people want to want to know about a book right off the bat. It's only about 250 pages and it's got lots of charts and call-outs that really make it easy to understand. The charts and the call-outs highlight the important points. Those highlights make it easy to read. The book gives you guidance on not only on how to live life, but how to enjoy life. So many people aren't enjoying their lives these days, even though, like you say, materially, we're doing better in the developed world than anybody in history ever has, but a lot of people aren't enjoying their lives. We see a lot of conflict between people these days. This book can be helpful, and I think people need something like that.

Ravi: Well, you're a wonderful man, Sir. I appreciate it. You made me feel so good about my book.

Bill: Well, thank you for having me on this broadcast. Very much appreciate it. And as you can tell, I enjoyed the book very much and I intend to refer to it in the future as well.

Ravi: Thank you, Sir. Thank you so much for joining us. Appreciate it.

Bill: Okay. Goodbye.

Ravi: Goodbye.

Full interview

Louie: Ravi, I've got to tell you, I've been having a great time talking with you off-air and I'm honored to have you, if you would, please introduce yourself and tell us about yourself.

Ravi: Sure. Thank you, Louie. Thank you for having me on your show. What a privilege and honor. I am Ravi Kathuria. I am a spiritual seeker on my journey from the mind to the soul. That is who I am. And in fact, that is who every one of us is.

Louie: Tell me, if you would, a little bit about your path to where you are today. And again, I love the book and I've been talking about the book “Happy Soul, Hungry Mind.”— A Modern Day Parable about Spirituality. Tell us a little bit about your path if you would.

Ravi: Yes. Thank you, Louie. Thank you for your feedback on the book. I’d love to talk to you more about it. Love to hear what you think about it.

Ravi: It's been an interesting path. I remember when I used to be 14, 15, actually it was 15 when I first meditated. It was the most incredible experience that I ever had.

Ravi: My family and mother were very spiritually inclined. My father followed a guru in India, and I watched him meditate for hours. He was very philosophical. I loved listening to him and his friends discuss spirituality and philosophy. That was amazing.

Ravi: I grew up in that household and I remember when I was in high school, I would not spend time playing with my friends. I would spend time walking in a playground thinking about why I came to Earth and who sent me.

Ravi: I will admit, I was a little bit afraid of dying at that point. And I was having this argument with whoever it was, and I said, "Look, this is my decision. I will decide when I die. Nobody else will."

Ravi: The spiritual pull has been there, from a young age, and yet I have spent the last 30 years, I blinked my eyes, and 30 years went by. I have spent time being an entrepreneur, creating two businesses, working for corporate America, I had five jobs, and then have authored two books. And it has come full circle. As I have looked at life, this thought has been in my mind, when I die, it will not matter how much money I have in the bank. What will matter is if I found my inner peace.

Ravi: Because all the money in the bank is not going to change anything, it will either make my doctors rich or my descendants rich, but it's not going to do anything for me and I'm not going to be able to take my money with me.

Ravi: I called the State Department. I said, "How can I take my money with me after I die?" They were not kind to me. Louie, they were not kind to me.

Louie: Ha, ha. I love your sense of humor. Ravi, I love your sense of humor. Go ahead.

Ravi: I realized, all these worries and tensions and pressures about money, I have coached very successful CEOs. They have incredible amounts of money, very powerful. And guess what? They're still worried about money. We all have to find our inner peace.

Ravi: As I look at my life, it is about going back to my center, I think that applies to me, and it applies to each one of us. We have to discover that inner peace within us.

Louie: You desire to want to share that with people.

Ravi: Yes.

Louie: Tell me about that.

Ravi: Thank you. A beautiful question. As I have thought about spirituality, spirituality has never been away. I have spent years thinking about it. Initially, when I would listen to all these gurus and spiritual authors, they made spirituality so complex and I wondered about that. If this is fundamentally who we are. Why is it so complex, why did, God, Almighty, the Universe, why did it make spirituality so complex, so difficult to understand?

Ravi: You look at the scriptures, they are thick. And even if you have three degrees, to go through scripture is not for the people who are not committed. I'm spiritually inclined, but every time I picked up a book, the subject is so heavy, I wondered, why is it that way?

Ravi: And then, I had a revelation, I suddenly realized spirituality is not complex. These gurus, these spiritual authors, these leaders had made it complex in their description. They have used such words, they've used such descriptions that have made it so complex.

Ravi: The day I realized, spirituality is stunningly simple, I had to share that. The world needs to know that because the majority of us are not thinking about spirituality on a day-to-day basis when we should be.

Ravi: When we realize, how simple it is, then we can incorporate it into our lives, and we can make the quality of our lives so much higher. It is the most amazing thing that we can do for our lives, and it is there for us and we're almost overlooking it.

Louie: The simplicity of it, and that's one of the things that I love you talk about and write about in your book, “Happy Soul, Hungry Mind.” By the way, folks, happysoulhungrymind.com. I've got links. WFMJ.com.

Louie: I wonder why sometimes some of the books on spirituality are so complex, and I shouldn't say needlessly, but sometimes, people will give up, stop, because of the complexity. We need spirituality, we need it in our lives, I hate to say now more than ever. Always, but I'm going to say now more than ever.

Ravi: Yes. We need it now more than ever because of world events, but also because of our evolution. As I read more, I find people are beginning to yearn for true spirituality. They are looking for that awakening.

Ravi: They are looking for the simple truths. And that is my purpose. As I was writing this book, “Happy Soul, Hungry Mind.” I realized I was writing about things that I did not know existed in me. They were manifesting themselves. They were revealing themselves -- these spiritual truths. I was baffled. I was amazed.

Ravi: It's like somebody walking on the beach and stumbling onto these gems. You have these gems in your hand and you say, I need to share these with the world. I need to go out and let the world benefit because these Spiritual Truths have such great power, they have such a potential to change our lives.

Ravi: We need to realize spirituality is simple.

Louie: Talk with me more if you would, Ravi, about them unveiling themselves to you?

Ravi: I talked about listening to the spiritual gurus and leaders and I would get turned off because of the complexity. I haven't really listened to them much.

Ravi: I had my thoughts about spirituality. And I would capture these thoughts. And I knew at some point I would like to start writing a book.

Ravi: But it was when writing this book, initially, the book became overwhelming. It was scary, I remember there was a night, when I said, "Oh, wow, there is so much here, I don't know if I will be able to piece it together." I wondered if my brain could actually comprehend and if I could put my arms around it.

Ravi: It was almost as if I was looking at this tsunami wave and it was ready to engulf me. I was overwhelmed and I was maybe scared and maybe doubtful. What have I taken on?

Ravi: I don't know if this happens to other authors, but it happens to me. And I'm willing to reveal it on a national radio station right now.

Ravi: As an author, I would wake up one day and I would have self-doubt. I would go, nobody's going to care about what I'm writing. What do I know? I don't know anything. And there is so much written on this subject. Who am I to think that I can add anything to this topic of spirituality? I mean, isn't that arrogance? Who am I?

You have self-doubt and you say, okay, this is so overwhelming, I cannot make sense of it. And then you wake up the next morning, and something has sorted out and then you see the light and you go, "Oh, my God, this is so powerful! This is what the world needs!” Until the next day when you go, "Oh my God, I cannot write a sentence."

You go through this roller coaster, it's unnerving. God bless my family for putting up with it. One day you think you're on the top of the clouds, the other day you think you are dust.

Ravi: Then slowly but surely, it began to all fit together. And as I wrote more, these concepts by themselves became very clear. There are a few things that I have written in the book, I have no idea where they come out from. I had no idea they existed in me. Now when I read it, I go, "Wow, this is incredible. This is fantastic. This is amazing.”

Now that I think about it, it has to be universal knowledge, which is manifesting. We are tapping into and it's just showing through. It flows through. These Spiritual Truths have left me amazed. I hope, people, when they read the book, realize the fact these are so simple and yet they are so stunning. If you think about it, they are just incredible.

Louie: Well, again, it's that simplicity you write about, about spirituality being simple and available to everyone. For some reason, there's certain... I'm going to say there are some organizations that benefit economically, I believe, by making it more complex.

Ravi: Yes.

Louie: You've got to come only through us, or only through me, or only through this organization, or membership in this organization, only then can you find God, if you will, or tap your soul or spirituality.

Ravi: Yes.

Louie: You make it accessible for everybody.

Ravi: Yes. That's a great point. And I will I, I hope I do not offend anybody, but I will go there. I will go there. Religion and I'm a religious person. I'm a religious person. But I've understood there's a big difference between religion and spirituality.

Louie: Yeah.

Ravi: I explain religion is like the picture of a pizza. It’s a very beautiful picture and you can hold a picture of the pizza and you can feel good about it, but it can never satisfy your hunger. Spirituality is actually eating the pizza.

Ravi: Now, religion is important because it reminds you of the pizza, it puts you in the mood for a pizza. So, there is a place for it. But if all you do is hold on to the picture and never actually eat the pizza, you have just deprived yourself. Plus, the picture of the pizza can never, ever, give you the true experience of the pizza.

Ravi: You can argue and say, well, my picture is better than your picture, but the people who are arguing have never eaten the pizza. They can spend time with this argument, it is great intellectually, but it doesn't do anybody any good.

Ravi: It is the eating of the pizza which satisfies. Spirituality is the real deal. I listen to religious leaders and they have found a way to exclude people. They come up with ways in which, they say, you cannot have this, this is so exclusive. You have to jump through hoops. You have to almost be superhuman to get this. To me, that is just... I'll be nice -- it's misleading.

Louie: I love how you paused for a minute, "I'll be nice. It's misleading."

Ravi: Everyone on Earth, who is a human being has spirituality in them. Nobody can give it to you, and nobody can take it away from you. It is in your DNA and it doesn't matter which religion you follow, whether you follow a religion. It does not matter. It does not matter whether you're a man or a woman or transgender. It does not matter whether you are gay or straight or bisexual. It doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor.

Ravi: It doesn't matter whether you're a Democrat or a Republican.

Louie: Ha ha.

Ravi: We have unity in the country. Does not matter whether you're independent. I am here to tell you, every one of you, and you don't have to come to me, you don't have to go to happysoulhungrymind.com or RaviKathuria.com to get spirituality. You already have it. I cannot give it to you. You're born with it. This is something in your back pocket. It's the most amazing thing. It doesn't matter if you're Asian or American. It does not matter who you are. As long as you're a human being, your DNA has spirituality in it. You have this capability, and it's the most amazing thing.

Louie: Again, it's HappySoulHungryMind.com. I would urge you to get the book and read the book. Talk with us a little bit about happiness.

Ravi: We have spent all our lives seeking happiness. We all want to be happy and what we have done is that our mind tells us how to be happy. The mind says, okay, if you acquire this thing, I will be happy. It could be an asset, or it could be a relationship. If you're starting out from school, you say, if I get a job, I'll be happy. If I buy a house, I'll be happy, the American dream, or if I build a business, I'll be happy or if I find a spouse or a partner, I'll be happy. If I have three kids, I'll be happy. If I'm elected senator, I'll be happy. If I get my first movie break, I'll be happy.

Ravi: What we're doing is satisfying the mind, to achieve happiness. But the problem with the mind is, as the book says, the mind is ever hungry. It's restless. The mind can never be satisfied, no matter what you give it.

You ask billionaires if they're satisfied. Look at the way they talk, they are in search of their next billion. Those of us who are not billionaires think, oh, if we had a billion dollars, that would be it. I would just sleep. Look at billionaires, they're not sleeping. They're in search of their next billion. They're working towards the next billion as hard as their first billion.

Ravi: The mind is never satisfied. That is the realization we have to come to. The happiness that the mind gives, there's nothing wrong with that happiness, the nature of that happiness is it's transient. It only lasts for a certain time. Over time, the happiness that you get even from your Ferrari is not the same level of happiness that you had on the first day, it begins to diminish.

Ravi: Your spouse was so wonderful while you were dating the spouse and then… oh, my God, I want to get into that subject (laughs). Same person, and you go, well, things are different.

Ravi: Where is true happiness? True happiness and everlasting happiness cannot be achieved through the mind. It can only be achieved by going beyond the mind.

Ravi: When you transcend the mind and the happiness that you find by transcending the mind, that happiness is not transient. It's permanent happiness and it should be the purpose of our life to experience that inner peace because then that gives us everlasting and true happiness.

Louie: I like how you say that because things aren't going to give us happiness and things are fleeting. You know, I, again and I don't want to go too long with this, but I was talking with some people about how many people are playing this big lottery. You know, there's a lottery, the national lottery. I think it's going to be like 600 million. It's interesting to me when a lot of people start to come out and play the lottery. I had a ticket for last night too, why not, two bucks, give it a shot. But again, I don't want to sound like I'm putting my finger at people, but what's interesting to me, and I was speaking with someone about the lottery to talk about how many people are buying tickets and how many more people, that all of a sudden if it hits like a half a billion dollars, that gets people off the couch to go play. Six million, which is the one in Ohio, which is the standard one somehow, I don't know, that's not enough?

Louie: I hate to say it because it's going to sound very judgmental. It is judgmental. The people that I see play, I think six million would probably do them just fine, maybe half a million or whatever. But it's something about that dream of, wow, that's now hundreds of millions of dollars. And all of a sudden that would bring me happiness.

I'm not discounting the ability to do good things with lots of money. You are very successful. Your business background, being quoted by The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, World News, NPR. You've been featured on PBS Nightly. I did my homework. Can you tell? Ted Talks, Business journal, etc.. you wrote a book, "How cohesive is your company?" You know, and it's clear that money doesn't, it can bring security for people, economic security of itself. Like you said about the Ferrari, buy the Ferrari, it feels great for a while, and it diminishes.

Ravi: Yes. You're right, you buy the Ferrari. The first day you drive it home and your wife's really upset, and you don't care, you go, I just drove home in a Ferrari, what does it matter? Two years later, you drive home back in the Ferrari, and your wife's upset. That drive home in the Ferrari doesn't make up for marital discord. Your husband could be upset, and you could be a woman driving home in a Ferrari. It doesn't matter. What I have found is that no matter what you get in life, there is no perfect happiness, until you go beyond the mind.

Ravi: You can win the 600 million dollars in the jackpot. Then you go home and suddenly you realize all your relationships have changed. Overnight. Your immediate relationships with your spouse, partner, your kids, your parents, your siblings, your extended family, your friends. That lottery will completely disrupt your relationships.

There is a high involved with winning money. It could be a step-change in your financial situation. But that high lasts only a while. After... they have done this research, you watch these TV programs of people who won the lottery and their level of happiness two, three years after the event goes back to the level that was before the lottery. They get used to the money.

Ravi: Happiness comes from our state of mind. It really comes from our perspective on life, on how we approach life. That happiness is still subject to our perspective, our thinking, our approach to life, if we really want true happiness, we have to begin to understand that true happiness lies, there is no problem in earning money, there is no problem in having a good family, there is no problem in living in a nice house and driving a nice car. We need to do that. There is no reason that we have to be homeless and live under the freeway. That's not what life is about. We need to have a good, decent life and have very good relationships with our family and have a good family life. But what we have to start understanding is that is only one dimension of life.

There is a dimension of life, the spiritual dimension that is available to us 24/7 that is accessible to us, we don't have to go anywhere. We have to touch into that and expose ourselves and build-up and progress in that spiritual dimension, because the happiness that we begin to get there is more powerful than winning the six hundred million dollar jackpot.

Ravi: Now, it doesn't mean that if you came to me and said, look, here's a winning ticket, will you take the six million dollars. Please, that's what I'm saying. If you have a winning ticket somewhere and you want to give me a call.

What I have to realize is that there is a limited value for that. I can have that. And this is actually, this is the most beautiful point. If you have inner peace. If you have connected with that inner peace that is there within you, you will enjoy that 600 million in a way that is far superior to if you did not have that inner peace. If you had inner peace and you had only 60 dollars in the bank, you would enjoy that 60 dollars, far better than you would if you did not have inner peace, and that is the power in life, is that all of us have that capability, have the capability to experience this inner peace.

When we begin to connect with it, our same existing life suddenly becomes golden. That is the message, that is the message that every one of us and if you are religious, good for you. If you are an atheist, good for you, it doesn't matter. Connect with your inner peace. That will take the quality of your life so much higher.

Louie: I'm talking with Ravi Kathuria. His Book Happy Soul, Hungry Mind, a modern-day parable about spirituality. Go to Ravi's website for more information. Happy Soul, Hungry mind, get the book, read the book, beautifully written. You write that your mind is an instrument for you to engage in the material world. It's not a tool to access the spiritual world. You can experience God only through your soul. Your soul is the handshake, like the conduit to God. Talk a little bit more about accessing that through your soul.

Ravi: Yes. Well, thank you, Louis. Thank you for picking that paragraph from the book. Yes. How beautiful is that?

Ravi: We, from our birth, we have used our mind to engage with the material world, in fact, those of us who are religious have used our mind to pursue God. But the mind is not the tool, it is not the vehicle, it is not the medium to access God. Why? God is an infinite phenomenon, the mind can only deal with finite things, the mind when it tries to deal with the infinite, it gets overwhelmed. The mind is not the tool.

That is why I have a problem with religious leaders when they are preaching to your mind. Because your mind can never experience God.

It's like we talked about the pizza. If I give you a picture of a pizza you can never taste it unless I come home, deliver the pizza and you taste it with your tongue. You have to have the sense of taste. Your eyes, no matter how long they stare at the pizza can never taste the pizza. Nothing wrong with your eyes. They are perfectly fine, 20/20 vision, but they cannot taste the pizza. Only your tongue can.

God cannot be experienced through the mind. Nothing wrong with the mind. The mind is not designed for the God experience.

Ravi: So how do you experience God? Because the mind will tell you, let me go to this religious place, let me go to this pilgrimage site, let me go to the skies or go to the clouds or let me go to the end of the universe. You're not going to find God. You are only chasing the God-concept that your mind has, which is a finite concept. We see God in the image of man, we see this trivialized version of God, and that is why you will never experience God through your mind.

Ravi: The only experience of God is when you quiet the mind. When you quiet the mind completely, and the mind is completely still, what happens is your soul, this life force, you call it the soul, the spirit, atma in Sanskrit, it doesn't matter what name you call it, there is a life-force, there is an energy in you, and you begin to experience it when your mind is completely quiet.

Ravi: Just like when there are clouds, you cannot see the sun. But when the clouds dissipate, the sun shines through. When your mind becomes completely quiet, your soul becomes self-evident, it shines through.

Ravi: The experience of your own soul, the experience of your own life energy is spirituality. This is the most stunning, simplest definition of spirituality.

Ravi: What is spirituality? Spirituality is the experience of your own life, energy. You don't have to go anywhere. You don't have to go to the Himalayas. You don't have to go to a monastery. That life force is in you right now. And the only thing that prevents you from experiencing your own life force is your mind is constantly working. When the mind becomes completely quiet, your soul becomes self-evident, like the sun becomes self-evident when the clouds dissipate.

Ravi: When we experience the soul and the mind is completely quiet, it is our first handshake with infinity. That experience of the soul, as it becomes stronger is what is called the God experience.

Ravi: God is infinite, and now you are shaking hands with the infinite because the tool that was used previously, the mind, is completely quiet and now you have no boundaries, no physical boundaries, no mental boundaries. The mind is completely sublimed, and you touch infinity.

Ravi: If you look through history, all the avatars, the prophets, the messiahs, the Buddhas, every one of them, what they're describing is this God experience, which has been beyond the mind. And when you experience that, that is your true nature, because your life force, that life energy is part of this infinite cosmic energy and you awake to is the true potential and true purpose of your life.

Louie: Absolutely beautiful. I'm enthralled by you, HappySoulHungryMind.com. Ravi, when you… another email just popped up. Can you talk a little bit more about quieting the mind?

Ravi: Yes. The mind, by nature, is restless. But the mind also can be allowed to become quiet and I use this example for those of you who have a pet. You have a little puppy and when the puppy is very energetic, if you try and control the puppy, the puppy will fight back. It's going to not calm down, he is going to pull, and you can try and catch him, but he'll be upset. Right. He has a lot of energy. So how do you quiet the puppy? What you do is you take him in the backyard, or you take him to a park, and you let him run. You tell him, run, run as much as you want. And the puppy goes and does whatever he needs to do. And he runs and runs and runs and runs. And then he comes and sits at your feet. You can try to push him away but he's not going to go. He'll sit at your feet and put his head down.

Ravi: The mind is the same thing. The mind likes to run. What do you say to the mind? Okay, if you want to run, run. But then ultimately, the mind will calm down and learn to become quiet.

I have a meditation technique. I have a video on simple, powerful meditation that is on YouTube, also on my website. It is the simplest meditation you can find. A lot of people tell me meditation is difficult for me, I find it boring. This meditation is as simple as it can get because all it is, is to just sit down, close your eyes and let the thoughts flow and you don't do anything. Your job is to observe. If you can observe the thoughts, great. If you get caught up in the thoughts, that's okay too. Don't feel guilty. You have no expectations. You just let the mind do whatever.

Ravi: Over time, if you do this regularly, day after day, you just sit down and relax. You will begin to notice fleeting moments of quiet silence. You have a lot of thoughts and suddenly you will experience a little bit of silence. And you watch that, you observe that, and it will go away, and in the beginning, they will come infrequently, but as you do this for weeks and months and years, these moments of silence, these glimpses of silence will become more frequent. You will experience more silence than thoughts.

Ravi: As you meditate the mind learns to become quiet and you will be on the path to experiencing your own life force.

In my book, “Happy Soul, Hungry Mind,” I share the spiritual path, which is to transform your thoughts, mature your perspectives, quiet your mind. It's a spiral, and it keeps going until you experience your soul.

To quiet the mind, please meditate and meditate using the simple basic method that I have shared. Over time, you will begin to experience your inner peace. It is the most fascinating aspect of your life.

Ravi: I will share with you the simplest and grandest spiritual statement. I hope your listeners, Louie, pay attention to this. Let me share with you this statement, which is the ultimate purpose of life.

Ravi: Quiet your mind to experience your own soul. That is it. That is the essence of life. It cannot get any simpler than that. It cannot get any grander than that. I will repeat it.

Ravi: Quiet your mind to experience your soul.

Louie: Beautiful. I so enjoyed this. Can you take just a minute and talk about your website, HappySoulHungryMind.com if you will?

Ravi: Yes. I'd love for you to visit HappySoulHungryMind.com. Give me your feedback. The website is a content driven website. We have pages about religion. We have pages about God, meditation, peace, stress and anxiety. There is a lot of content there. And you can also follow me on social media, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram. But the website is the most effective because all the content is arranged, is organized. If you're looking for meditation, you can easily find my videos on meditation or my articles. I have some provocative articles about God and religion. Please be nice to me.

Louie: You're a very nice guy. Again, I would urge people to go to the site HappySoulHungryMind.com. I really enjoyed this, and I would love to continue this conversation with you down the road if you're up for it. I love the way about you. You make it so accessible and you make it accessible for everybody. And I love that about you Ravi. You really do. And you, you've got such a wonderful way about you, such a wonderful personality.

Ravi: Thank you, Louie. And Louie is absolutely right, thank you, Louie, for underscoring this point. Thank you for reminding me and for reminding all your listeners of this point that Louie is making.

Ravi: We have talked about quiet your mind to experience your soul. Nowhere does it say you have to be a person of a certain faith. It did not say you have to be a person of a certain gender. It did not say you have to be a certain age. It did not say anything. It did not say what geography you live in, did not say anything. All it said was to quiet your mind to experience your soul. You can do that. You may be a convicted felon inside a prison. The law might execute you, but you still have the ability to quiet your mind, to experience your soul. Nobody can take that away from you as long as you're a human being. You have that capability.

Ravi: Humanity has used religion to fight with each other and kill each other. To divide us. Spirituality is the greatest unifying force that is there because it's there in all of us. Every one of us has the ability to quiet our mind, to experience the soul. We do not need anybody else's permission. It doesn't matter how others judge us or not, we have that capability. Exercise that capability. It is available to you 24/7 in your own home. That is what God, the Universe nature has gifted you, that is the ultimate purpose, work on experiencing your soul.

Louie: Absolutely beautiful. I would urge people to go to the website, folks, so wonderful, HappySoulHungryMind.com, HappySoulHungryMind.com. Read the book, go to the website and learn more about Ravi Kathuria. You're wonderful. Let's do this again.

Ravi: I would love to. Louie, you are fantastic. I appreciate your energy, sir. Thank you. It makes me feel so good. Thank you. What a privilege. Thank you.

Louie: Back at you. Your energy is wonderful. I love the conversation off-air and we were talking a little bit before. I just. I love your energy. This is our first time together. We'll do it again soon. Please, Ravi. I would like that. I would like to thank you again. I would again urge you enough to go to the website, have that as a starting point again, HappySoulHungry Mind.com, HappySoulHungryMind.com.

My interview with Tom Sumner of the Tom Sumner Radio Show

I was interviewed by Tom Sumner of the Tom Sumner radio show hosted on WFOV 92.1 FM in Flint, Michigan.

http://www.tomsumnerprogram.com/

I really enjoyed the interview with Tom. He asked probing questions in a gentle manner. What is spirituality? What is the difference between religion and spirituality? He asked an interesting question about soul and mind, which many people confuse with each other. It was good to shed light on that subject.

We then talked about ways to quiet the mind, from visiting places of worship to spending time in nature.

Then Tom made a comment… he was highly perceptive, in making this remark — I was delighted. He said, “There are a number of different ways to try to quiet your mind. But I wonder if people are fully aware that that's the goal.”

It is such a powerful question/observation. The reason for all the religions, all the scriptures, all the talk about God and heaven, all the talk about spirituality, all the time spent in nature, all the time spent in community service — the goal of all of those pursuits is — to quiet the mind! That is the Goal!! That is the highest pursuit in life. Nothing else comes close to it, no other purpose, no other goal. When we learn to quiet the mind, our life transforms!

Quiet the Mind — That is the Goal!

You can watch the video above and/or read the entire interview below. Thank you.

Full interview

Tom: Hi, this is Tom from the Tom Sumner program. My long format interviews with New York Times bestselling authors, photographers and writers from National Geographic, as well as artists, musicians, candidates and elected officials are made possible by listeners like you.

Tom: We're going to talk this hour about a different kind of nutrition with the author of a book called "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." His name is Ravi Kathuria. I think I'm pronouncing that right. Ravi, welcome to the show.

Ravi: Thank you, Tom. Thank you for inviting me to the Tom Sumner Show. I'm thrilled to be here and appreciate you hosting me. I want to say good morning to all your listeners in Flint, Michigan. Thank you for making me part of your day.

Tom: Ravi, did I pronounce your last name right? Kathuria.

Ravi: I thought you did great, sir. It is Kathuria. That was really good.

Tom: I've been worried about it for a day or two.

Tom:  Well, tell me in the book "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." you attempt to demystify spirituality. How is spirituality mystified and how is it distinct from religion?

Ravi: Thank you, Tom. Great question. We're jumping right into it.

So, you asked me two parts to that question. Let's talk about the first one about demystifying spirituality.

I have been thinking about spirituality since I was young, and I spend a lot of years thinking about why spirituality was so complex.

Because whenever I listened to spiritual leaders and spiritual authors, they described spirituality in such complex terms, it was almost scary.

I realized I needed to get a new Ph.D. in English to understand the terms that they were using. They used words heavy words. And then if you try and read those books or even the scriptures, it is heavy stuff.

I realized if spirituality is so germane to us, if it is important to us, why does it have to be so complex? Why was it designed that way?

It hit me one day. I came to the realization, spirituality is not complex, spirituality is as simple as you can make it.

It was just that the descriptions that people had used to describe spirituality made it mystical. They put on all these layers. They mixed it with religion, and suddenly spirituality became complex and it became out of reach of the common man.

When I think about what I want to do in life, I want everyone on Earth to understand spirituality is really simple.

Tom: Yeah, I'd like to do that because the way I hear spirituality referred to under two different conditions. One is somehow measuring a person's commitment to their faith in a particular religion. The other is to talk about not being religious but being spiritual. That's two different things. If we don't understand what spirituality means, we're probably not using it properly.

Ravi: Yes, great question, sir.

This ties back to your earlier question about the difference between religion and spirituality.

Let me share an example. Say you want to go to the airport, and you have several choices for ground transportation. You can call a cab, you can take a bus, or you could take a train or a subway based on which city you are in.

You have choices for ground transportation. There are organized ways, some organization has provided that capability,  or you could say, “No, I'm not going to use organized transportation, I'm going to drive myself, or if you're staying close by, bicycle there. Whatever mode of transportation you choose, you could get to the airport.

I equate these modes of transportation to religion. If you are taking a bus, you're subscribing to some religion. If you are taking your own car, you are believing in your own beliefs."

It doesn't matter which mode of transportation you use to get to the airport. Because there, the gate agent doesn't ask you, "Tom, how did you get here?"

The gate agent checks your paperwork and lets you board the flight. That flight represents spirituality.

This is a great philosophical point. Religion is a means to get you to spirituality. You could be an atheist and still get to the airport.

The philosophical point is that if you reach the airport and you say, “I arrived in the fanciest car, I have a Rolls-Royce or a Ferrari, I love my car so much I'm not going to let go of my car. If you do that, you will never be able to board the flight.

Religion is a means to get to spirituality, but there is a juncture at which you have to leave behind religion. You then board the plane, the flight of spirituality.

Spirituality and religion can go hand in hand if religion takes you to spirituality. Religion reminds you, it makes it easier to get to spirituality because there is an organization that facilitates it. There is a community that facilitates it. But you must remember, the goal of religion must be to get you to spirituality.

Tom: And is that, in fact, the goal of most religions?

Ravi: It should be.

There are a lot of interpretations that people have of religion, but as I see it, religion must lead you to spirituality. I see that as the purpose of religion.

We all need the help, we need the support, and religion can be extremely helpful in helping us in difficult times, right, because it can give us a foundation, a structure that we can hold on to, otherwise, we will be completely lost and overwhelmed in life.

Religion has a very important place in our lives. Faith can have a very important place, but we have to understand if we have not made progress towards spirituality, if I have spent all my time just focused on religion, then I may have missed out on the most important aspect of life. And that aspect is spirituality.

Tom: What do we say to people who seem to be spurning religion and yet claim to be very spiritual?

Ravi: Yes, people may have questions about religion. They believe in some aspect of it and not believe other aspects of it… let’s first discuss the definition of spirituality. If we understand what spirituality is, then we can understand better how religion and spirituality fit together.

Let's discuss the simplest definition of spirituality that you could find probably anywhere. It couldn't get any simpler. And may I submit to you, sir, it may not get any grander than this.

What is spirituality? I hope your listeners are paying attention. This is probably one of the most important things I could share with them on this news Tuesday morning.

Spirituality is the experience of our own soul. It is the connection with our own soul.

Now, what is the soul? People use different terms to describe the soul. People call it spirit, soul, they call it atma in Sanskrit, they may call it rooh in Urdu. In every language there is a word for the soul, but what is it?

It is the life force that is in you and me. It is the energy that gives me dynamism. Once this energy leaves, the doctor is going to call my wife and say, "I'm sorry, Ravi left."

My body will still be there, but the doctor will say, no, he's gone. He passed away. Why? That energy is gone. That energy is who I am. The soul...

Tom: Could you call it consciousness?

Ravi: Yes, yes.

Consciousness, awareness, are driven by this energy. Once this energy leaves, consciousness disappears. Awareness disappears.

Spirituality is about connecting with this energy.

Tom: It's the level to which you are in touch with your own soul.

Ravi: Yes.

And it can strengthen and all of us. We can have glimmers of our own souls.

We experience the soul in many different ways. When the sun is shining in the sky, but if you have a cloudy day, you don't see it. When the clouds move away, you start seeing the sun.

Tom: I wanted to ask you something about the title of the book, Happy Soul. Hungry Mind. Are those two things separate, or is there a reason that you put them together in the title?

Ravi: Ah, what a wonderful question, sir.

When I was writing the book, and before it was published, I went asked a lot of people what they thought about the title. They said they loved the title. They said the hungry mind as they heard it, it represented to them the curious mind, the mind that was hungry for knowledge. And then, of course, the soul is all happiness.

The book is completely opposite to what they interpreted. The book talks about the mind not being hungry in terms of curiosity but being hungry in terms of being never satisfied.

The mind is always restless, it's always asking for more. It's never content, no matter how much you achieve in life, it wants more. And the mind has its fears, its apprehensions, its stress and anxiety. It has greed. The mind is always hungry.

We have to realize we are all seeking happiness. We're all seeking peace. But we try to do that by satisfying the mind. The problem with trying to satisfy the mind is that it never gets satisfied.

I shouldn't say it's a problem with the mind, that's just the nature of the mind. I cannot complain the fire is hot. That is its nature. The mind's nature is to be restless. The question is — I use this line in the book — the mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

Tom: Absolutely right.

Ravi: You want to choose. Do I want the mind to lead me or do I want to lead the mind?

Think about people who have a dog. Some people, the dog is leading them, and other people the dog is following them. It depends on how they have trained the dog.

Do you want the mind to be in control of you or do you want to be the person who is in charge of your mind?

You are not the mind. So, who are you? You are the owner of the mind. We need to be the owners of the mind. And we need to say to the mind, “You work for me.” The day we all get to that stage will be a beautiful phase of our life because the mind will do our bidding.

We need the mind to interact with the world, but we need to understand that the mind is constantly hungry, and when we try to achieve happiness through the mind, we keep falling short.

So then where is the source of happiness? Where is the source of permanent happiness? That source of permanent happiness lies beyond the mind.

And that is where spirituality comes in.

Tom: When you talk about the soul, you talk about it as being happy or where happiness can occur. The mind is always hungry. But yet I encounter people who don't seem to have a hungry mind. They don't seem very curious. And there are people who would say they have a troubled soul. What role does spirituality play in having those two distinct parts of our energy?

Ravi: I explain it in this manner. The soul is pristine, the soul is pure. The soul is pure energy. You do not have a troubled soul, what you have is a troubled mind.

We don't have good or bad people, we have good or bad minds. If you want to distill that even further, it's not good or bad minds, it's good or bad thought. It's good or bad memories, it's good or bad feelings based on all the thoughts that we have collected.

I do not say someone is a troubled soul. People say you are a good soul, you are a bad soul. You're an old soul, you are a new soul. Energy is neither old and new, energy is not good or bad. Energy is just simply energy.

It's like watching a TV. On your TV, you may either watch a peaceful beautiful lake and or watch a bubbling volcano that is hot. In either case, your TV does not become cold or hot. The TV has nothing to do with what you are watching on it. The temperature of the TV doesn't change because you are watching a volcano on it.

The soul is pure and pristine. What are you overlaying on it? Your mind. You may have a troubled mind or stable mine, a curious or non-curious mind, a hungry or satisfied mind. It's all about the mind and we need to understand that. We need to stop projecting that onto the soul. The soul is pure.

Tom: That's such an important point and I'm so glad you explained that, because I think a lot of people do feel like they have a troubled soul when in fact, I think you're right, Ravi. I think it really is their mind.

Ravi: Yes, Tom, thank you for underscoring that.

I want to add this point. When people say, "I have a troubled mind." That is the solution right there. They can put a distance between them and their mind, and say, "My mind is going through a lot of apprehensions. My mind is going through a lot of struggles." Then they can begin to separate a little from the mind. Now, it takes a lot of time and effort to develop a separation from the mind. But over time it is possible.

Tom: And then it becomes a matter of learning to quiet your mind.

Ravi: Yes. Yes, sir. Great observation.

In my book, I share a statement or a mantra. It is the most important spiritual statement. The ultimate purpose for our lives is to quiet our hungry minds, so we can let our happy souls shine.

That is the purpose. If we can quiet the mind, then, like the sun shines through when the clouds dissipate, once the mind is quiet, the soul shines through. It's the beauty of nature. It is the amazing gift that we have and all we have to learn to do in our life, the purpose of our lives, is to learn to quiet the mind.

Tom: I wonder, there are so many ways that people turn to do that. It could be, you know, reading the Bible, it could be meditation. There are a number of different ways to try to quiet your mind. But I wonder if people are fully aware that that's the goal.

Ravi: Oh, wow! Tom, you are so perceptive, you are so perceptive, you have hit the nail on the head.

Tom: Well, I get lucky sometimes.

Ravi: Ha, ha. I want to pay you more respect than that. This is more than luck. You have caught on to the point.

Hopefully, this segment today will remind people of what you have just said. There are so many ways to quiet the mind. You can go to church, especially on the day when nobody is there, there is no sermon. You're just sitting there all by yourself. And what happens when you are not thinking about, I have to pay a mortgage, or what my boss is thinking, or what my spouse is thinking, or whether my kids have food to eat, or I have to go check on my parents. You're just sitting there calm and peaceful. Guess what happens?

People come back and say, well, I experienced, I spoke with God. What is happening is that you are experiencing at that moment your peace within. You're experiencing the glimmer of your own soul when the mind is quiet.

There are other people who go climb mountains, right. When they reach the summit, there is no one else there, they are just by themselves. They look around, there is no other thought in their mind, and they experience the peace within. That is the glimmer of the soul.

We all have to realize the goal is to quiet the mind so we can experience the ocean of peace within us. When we connect with our soul, when we begin to experience our soul, we are filled with so much peace. That experience is... amazing. You cannot describe it, words cannot describe that experience.

Tom: It's so interesting talking about the different ways that people can approach quieting their minds. I'm reminded that I took up golf for a while. I was never very good, but I would tend to go by myself and on days that weren't particularly busy. Basically, I was just taking a walk and I found it to be very restorative and very peaceful and yet I see so many people that dragged their clients and their business associates and their coworkers out on a golf course and turn it into a big meeting when it could be an opportunity to try to achieve some spirituality by quieting your mind.

Ravi: Yes, to connect with nature.

Tom: And there are so many ways to do it, I mean, I'm just I'm picking one that's a little outside the box. People don't really think of going golfing as a spiritual experience, but it can be.

Ravi: We need some golf sponsors for your program.

Tom: Ha, ha. But it can be taking a hike in the woods or as you suggested, going to church at a time when no one else is there. There are lots of paths, but you need to kind of know where you're going.

Ravi: And you need to understand what the purpose is. How is religion helpful? If you hear a sermon, and after you hear a sermon, you become more peaceful, then you're moving in the right direction. If you hear a sermon and it makes you agitated and angry or dissatisfied, you're not moving in the right direction.

Tom: I loved your analogy about transportation to the airport. And when you get there and you talk to the ticket agent, he doesn't ask you how you got there. He asks you where you're going.

Ravi: Yes, the soul doesn't care. I have certain beliefs to help me deal with life’s challenges and to make me peaceful.

But my soul does not care what I believe. My beliefs cannot cast an impression on my soul. What I believe or do not believe is a dimension of my mind. My mind keeps changing its beliefs, my mind is faithful one day, it's not faithful the next day. It doesn't matter what the mind does, the soul is unaffected by what the mind does.

Tom: I think I'm getting to understand this a little bit, Ravi. When we talk about spirituality being a way to get in touch with your soul, which is ultimately your happy place, and in order to do that effectively, we've got to get our mind to shut up.

Ravi: Yes. The sun is not affected by whether there are clouds or not. Only you get affected because you cannot see the sun. The sun doesn't care whether there are clouds. No matter how many clouds you have...

Tom: And that's such a great analogy because if you can remove the clouds, then you can see the sun and it literally changes your mood.

Ravi: Yes.

The sun is always there, it's always present, and it just shines through. You don't have to do anything at that point. You don't have to call out to the sun. You don't have to do a sun-dance. You don't have to worship it, you don't have to give it offerings or bribe it. It just shows up.

As soon as the clouds dissipate, the sun has no choice but to shine through. And that is the crux of spirituality. I hope people will read the book because I talk about this in the book. It's how the soul will shine through because it has no choice. It is nature. When the mind is quiet, you will experience glimmers of your soul. It is guaranteed. It is a law of nature. It will happen to you.

Whether you are religious or not your soul will shine through. I talk about why spirituality does not discriminate. The soul doesn't care what the mind thinks. The soul doesn't care what body you are, whether you are a male, female or transgender, what your sexual identity is. You're gay or straight, it doesn't matter to the soul. The soul will shine through if your mind is quiet.

Tom: And there's a full circle to this, too, if you can quiet your mind, get in touch with your soul. You can then inspire your mind to have better thoughts, better solutions.

Ravi: Yes, you are a wonderful man, sir. Thank you. You are so wonderful. I hope your listeners appreciate you because what you have just described is that when we begin to connect with the peace within, our fears and anxieties in the mind that we have been harboring for years, their hold on us becomes lesser and lesser.

The mind stops chasing. Otherwise, I think, I have x amount of money in the bank. Now if I can get 2x, if I can double it, then I will be happier.

Once you have experienced the peace within, then you say, yes, I need the money because I need to sustain myself. I don't want to sleep on the street, I need a certain amount of money, but the hold that money has on you becomes lesser. Everything that you see in life, you're not as bothered by it as much. You begin to live a life that is so wonderful. The quality of your life improves. Wherever you go… we have the phrase, “Smelling the roses.…”

Tom: Yeah.

Ravi: You say, well, I've been coming to this golf course for 20 years, but I'm seeing it for the first time.

Tom: I was at that very golf course I was telling you about. One time and I got to the seventh hole and there's a big trash can there by where you tee off. And I just happened to glance in it and there was a golf club bent in half sticking in this trash barrel, and I thought, there's somebody that isn't doing it right.

Ravi: Yeah. Yeah.

Tom: They're not having the joy they could be having out here.

Ravi: Great point, sir. The same golf course, the same beautiful nature, you go there, and you experience peace, that person went there, and they experienced frustration.

Tom: Exactly, exactly. It was an interesting moment for me of realization. Some people take it way too seriously. I was never a good golfer, but I did find happiness. I did enjoy it.

Ravi: Yes. We talk about the things that we don't have, but we have our families and loved ones. I tell people, especially those who have young kids, I say to them, take some time out and go into the room where the kids are playing and just watch them for 30 seconds.

Tom: Oh, yeah.

Ravi: Record that memory in your own mind. We have cameras and, camcorders these days, but the memories that we record in our mind, that 10 years from now, 15 years from now, will serve you very well. And we have to string through these beautiful moments that we have in life.

Tom: Ravi, the one thing that we're running out of his time, but I always want to give guests an opportunity to let listeners know where they can find out more about what we've been talking about. Obviously, the book is a great place to start. "Happy Soul, Hungry Mind." by Ravi Kathuria and Ravi, in the 30 seconds or so that we have left, do you have a website?

Ravi: Yes, sir, HappSoulHungryMind.com

Tom: Perfect. Well, Ravi, it's been a real pleasure talking with you. I can't believe how fast the time has gone. I feel like you and I could talk about this for hours.

Ravi: Yes. Thank you, sir. Thank you. What a pleasure. And what an honor, sir. Thank you for inviting me and for hosting me. And I enjoyed our conversation. Thank you so much.

Tom: Take care. Once again, the name of the book is called "Happy Soul. Hungry Mind." by Ravi Kathuria.

Over the ages people have pondered life’s most important questions:

  • What is God? Does God Exist?
  • What is happiness?
  • What is the purpose of life?
  • What is the difference between religion and spirituality?
  • Can atheists be spiritual?
  • Does spirituality have preconditions? Does it discriminate?
  • Does homosexuality affect spirituality?

In the past, the answers to these questions have been shrouded in mystery, mysticism and confusion.

Ravi Kathuria clearly shares simple, logical and eye-opening answers to these questions in his parable on modern, non-religious spirituality — “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.”

Read “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.” and find the answers. Let us change the world.
